LA 2016 has been a fantastic experience and a fully different and unique experience from any comic convention Jeramy and I are use to attending. This conference is like the grown-up version of a convention or more accurately, a trade show, and comic conventions are like sitting at the kiddie table compared to this.

The ALA conference was full of big time publishing companies handing out free books, an editor from Dark Horse was at the show that Jeramy was thrilled to talk to, and there were distribution companies that I picked their brains [and the publishers as well] about the next steps I can take with Oops. We never really encountered these opportunities at comic conventions.

Artist alley was filled with both independently published and published comic books [Scholastic, Oni, First Second, Penguin, Abrams]. Jeramy and I were beyond honored to table next to such talent and the nicest people you could meet. Eddie Pittman’s Red Planet, Zach Lehner’s Junior Braves of the Apocalypse, Ben Hatke’s Zita the Spacegirl, Josh Ulrich’s Jackie Rose, Stephen McCranie’s Mal and Chad, Shelli Paroline & Braden Lamb, Jason Horn, Jason Brubaker’s Remind, Michael Regina’s Adamsville, Mike Maihack’s Cleopatra in Space, Joey Weiser’s Mermin, Jeremy Whitley’s Princeless, John Green’s Teen Boat, Cat Farris, and MORE! :Geeks out!:

Also, we were BLOWN away by now nice, openly willing to have a conversation, inclusive, and wildly fun these librarian and teacher attendees are. The stereotype of a stern stuffy librarian didn’t not apply here at all. These great people know how to have a good time, they are diverse, and accepting of all people. They had restrooms marked as gender neutral restrooms for any and all to use, they held Pulse Nightclub memorials everyday before the show, and had pins and tags to attach to badge/name tags to show pride and support. I can’t express how much this moved me.

[TL:DR] ALA is amazing. We’ll be looking into attending more books shows. Librarians ROCK and we need to volunteer more. We would totally do this again if given the chance. Thanks for the awesome weekend ALA ♥
